Bina Swadaya didirikan oleh Ikatan Petani Pancasila, 24 Mei 1967. Mulanya bernama Yayasan Sosial Tani Membangun. Pendiriannya terkait dengan Gerakan Sosial Pancasila (Buruh, Tani, Nelayan, Paramedis dan Usahawan) yang berdiri sejak tahun 1954.
